Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead

Holy Crap. I forgot how much a good book can completely draw you in. The Vampire Academy series is so well written, I can’t put the books down. I can’t believe that I haven’t been reading these books the moment they have come out! What was I waiting for?

For my new book challenge this year, I have decided that I need to actually start reading the books that I own. I obviously bought them because I wanted to read them. I recently started rereading two series; The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead and The House of Night Books by P.C. and Kristin Cast. They both are somewhat similar; but completely different. They both are about a boarding school housing vampires and using magic. The biggest difference are the main characters. In VA, the main character is a dhampir named Rose, who is basically trying to find her way in the Moroi life. In HoN, the main character is Zoey, a vampire with special abilities that is fighting an ancient evil and developing into a high priestess of Nyx.

Shadow Kiss is far my favorite book in the VA series. Not only does Rose get to finally get involved with Dimitri and not just sex, but they finally open up about their love for each other. Also, Rose gets to prove herself to the other novices and guardians.  Having read Vampire Academy and Frostbite not so long ago, I was able to really get into the characters and their stories. Mead did a really good job of expressing the feelings that Rose and her counterparts were feeling. I felt like I was living with Rose. Although I didn’t actually cry, I did tear up at the end. Whoever said that books mostly have happily ever after endings….well they were wrong. REALLY wrong.

I don’t want to give too much away. But dang. I don’t think Rose could go through anymore and still be sane. Obviously there is….there are more books. I’m excited to start Blood Promise. I can’t imagine what else can happen!!

Succubus Dreams by Richelle Mead

This is the third installment of the series. You definitely have to read this series in order, or a lot of things won’t make sense to you.

This one was a little slower for me than I remember the first two, but it was still a good one!!

In this one, Georgina has trouble keeping her energy. For some reason, every time she gets a fix that night she dreams about being a mother and having a family and when she wakes up…poof..no energy. At first, no one believes her, but then a group of Angels come around and are looking for something they won’t tell anyone about.

As well as this small mystery, Georgina and Seth’s relationship grows and well…falls in this book. I cannot…and I mean CANNOT believe that Seth would go out and sleep with Maggie, Georgina’s friend. WTF!?! Yes, Georgina sleeps with guys…she has to. She’s a succubus. BUT she never does it in the same body that Seth knows or with someone she knows. Seth freaking has sex with her good friend!! If I were Georgina I would be out of there…and I really hope that she is!!! There has got to be someone else out there!! Come on!! I would be pissed.

I guess I better put the next one Succubus Heat on order at the library!!

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

I’ve had this book on my shelf ever since it’s come out and I just haven’t had the time to read it. All I have to say is, damn, I should have picked it up sooner. I LOVED this book. OMG I can’t even put into words how great this book is. I can’t wait for the sequel Frostbite to come out.

I’m not one to give out spoilers, I just want to put a small summary up. I did want to say that I really like Richelle Mead’s writing style. It flows well and it seems that she really digs into the worlds that she creates. I’ve read both Succubus Blues and Succucbus on Top (which I have a review up for) and all of them are so detailed and just great. You really get sucked into the action and actually understand and feel what the characters are doing and saying.

Rose and Lissa are the best of friends. Lissa is a royal in the Moroi society and Rose is training to become her guardian. The Moroi’s are full “blooded” vampires, while their guardians are vampire/human mix called dhampir’s. Rose and Lissa have escaped the vampire and dhampir school (Saint Vladimir’s Academy in Montana) and are on the run. They not only have to watch out for the officals of the school that are looking for them, but for the Strigoi (vampires that have turned bad that take blood from Moroi instead of human “feeders”).

They get caught by the school and are sent back. They are on probation and have to reassimilate into the school society where they are looked on as outcasts. Lissa has developed a special bond with Rose that lets Rose feel her emotions and even lets her share her thoughts. Lissa begins getting dead animals left with her at random moments. They don’t know who is doing it or for what reason. Rose wants to escape with Lissa again to run from the trouble that they are sure to find staying at the school. The only thing that keeps her there is the threat of not being able to protect Lissa if needed and also her trainer, Dimitri.

Rose and Lissa have many changes and rough times to go through. They have to find out who is sending Lissa dead animals and what they want. Plus, Lissa’s special powers are turning on her and they need to find out how to control them.

I recommend this book to any vamp lovers. It’s a totally different version of the usual vamp story and has a kick-ass female heroine.
